Farm-to-School

-         Jan Hanson, Wenatchee H.S. Kitchen Manager, would like to have Tony Davis and Richard Kitos return to school to demonstrate cooking/ preparing fresh foods.  No date has been set.

-         Currently, almost 10% of produce at the H.S. comes from local farmers.

-         A parents group has been working with the elementary schools on improved nutrition education.  They have discussed the idea of assemblies, or incorporating nutrition education with PE classes.  Also, it would be nice to put up simple educational posters (first need to contact the schools).  Joan suggested that those interested in working on this could meet at another time.

-         East Wenatchee School District contracts with a food service company, Sodexo.  Because of this, changes might be more limited or complicated.  Susie Howard is the Food Services Director, and would be the person to contact, should anyone be interested in this issue in E. Wenatchee.

-         “Local Farms, Healthy Kids” Act in Washington:

Community Garden – Community Center has a food bank, and could harvest from plots if they weren’t being harvested.  The hope is that the garden will help connect neighbors in south Wenatchee.  The garden has been winterized with Austrian peas and rye.

School Gardens – the gardens have also been winterized.

AmeriCorps – “Keep It Simple Service” (KISS)

-         They can propose and vote on service projects, using the entire AmeriCorps team of volunteers (about 60 people!).

-         They would like to do something with the community center (setting up compost, working on garden, etc.) and/or school gardens

-         It would be about 4-5 hours on the day of service.

Calendars – Sandi is doing an awesome job!  The plan is to have the calendar ready to go to the printers by November 1st, so they’ll be ready to sell by Nov. 16th (at the museum).

NEXT MEETING:  December 8th at 6:30pm (as a combined November/December mtg) at Wenatchee World Conference room. Holiday Potluck!
