Pybus Community Meeting on 8/17/2010 at the NCRL building at 5:30

Local Food Fridays is being hosted by EAT on Friday 8/6/2010.  Setup at 5-5:30 the event is often “dead” until 6 at least.  Games we’ll be hosting are match the chicken to the egg, Fruit hopscotch, match the veggie to the season, and compare store yolks with farm raised yolks.  We are also making a list of egg producers and Magler Farms will have heritage turkeys this year.

Friends and Community Festival will happen on September 11th.  EAT will have an informational table  and provide similar games as for Local Food Fridays.  Event is all day at the Unitarian Church site.  If you would like to help out, please contact Joan at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Taste of the Harvest will happen in Downtown Wenatchee this year on September 18th.  If you would like to help out, please contact Joan at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

IRIS success summit will happen on November 17th, contact Nancy Warner for more details.

Community Gardens Weeding Party on 8/9/2010 with a Community Block Party on 8/12/2010 in conjunction with the Methow Park Farmer’s Market.  EAT will provide drinks, with a potluck featuring food from the gardens.

EAT 2011 Calendars.  Take your high resolution pictures of your local farmers and chefs NOW.

12:50     Treasurer’s Report:  $1183.97 We still have outstanding calendar sales from 2010 at Café Mela and Top Foods

12:55     Latino community cross cultural outreach.  Blanca Alvarez has a child at Wenatchee High school and nieces and nephews involved in the EPIC Head Start programs in East Wenatchee.  EPIC has a family meeting every month on the 2nd Thursday of the month where parents and other family are present.  There are 3 EPIC programs in East Wenatchee, Wenatchee, and Bridgeport.  We could possibly present there and maybe do a food preparation activity with kids.  Talk of pulling in a chef was bantered around, Blanca recommended community members like police or fire men.  We would need to check the rules on food handler license(s).

Other outreach ideas include getting community support at Mission View School Garden.  Establishing a weekly cooking class at the Community Center that would ideally feature simple foods and fresh veggies.  Again talk of key community members leading classes like police, fire fighters, geography professors, and financial advisors.

Broader outreach ideas include a High School healthy eating club or a diabetes club.  Branwyn Schaub was trying to start a local business club that might have tie ins.  Also, maybe combine a number of existing clubs and organizations (like DECA, FFA, FLA, etc) to support a local food club and link it to Tony Davis and Richard Kitos’ next appearance.  Advantage of combination is that it increases the buy in from the popular kids that set many of the trends in High Schools, and also might increase teacher buy in as well.

1:30ish  Joan Qazi attended a K-12 sustainability education conference at IslandWood center on Bainbridge Island.  The conference included trying to come up with integrated environmental & sustainability curriculum.  For school gardens across the state, many Master Gardener programs have been stepping up and giving assistance with weeding and harvest in the summer season.

1:50ish  Kids day at the market will happen at the Wenatchee Farmer’s Market on August 28.  Students will sell school garden produce and Youth United volunteers will help harvest veggies.

Doug says “Come to the Fair” for the County Fair this year during the first weekend in September.  EAT will not be able to staff a booth though.

1:53        MooCow Meeting is adjourned.

This was a combined July/August meeting, so our next meeting will be Wednesday, September 29th at 6:30pm in the Wenatchee World Conference room.  Bring your harvest goodies to share!
